You finally have your puppy home… now what?
Bringing a new puppy home is exciting, emotional, and sometimes a little overwhelming. Those first few weeks are some of the most important moments in your puppy’s life. Proper training doesn’t just teach your puppy to sit or stay — it builds confidence, creates structure, and helps your puppy understand the world around them. Puppies thrive on routine, clear expectations, and positive experiences, and the time you invest early on will shape the dog your puppy becomes.
The most important things to focus on right away are potty training, crate training, socialization, and basic obedience. Potty training teaches your puppy where and when it’s appropriate to go, while crate training gives your puppy a safe place to relax and learn independence. Socialization is just as important — introducing your puppy to new people, places, sounds, and experiences helps prevent fear and anxiety later in life. Basic obedience like sit, come, and walking nicely on a leash helps create a strong foundation for communication between you and your dog.
Training should always be positive, consistent, and patient. Puppies are learning everything for the first time, and they will make mistakes. That’s part of the process. The goal is not perfection overnight — the goal is progress, trust, and building a lifelong bond with your dog.
A well-trained puppy grows into a confident, well-mannered adult dog that can go more places, meet more people, and be a bigger part of your life. Training isn’t just about having a well-behaved dog — it’s about creating a happy, balanced companion that understands the world they live in and feels safe in it.
The work you put into your puppy today will last a lifetime.
There are many ways to learn how to properly train your puppy, and finding the right approach for you is key. Some families prefer reading books, others benefit from hands-on guidance with a professional trainer, and many turn to online videos for flexibility and convenience. No matter which path you choose, having a clear, proven system can make all the difference in reducing stress and helping you feel confident as a new puppy owner. That’s why I’m overjoyed to share an incredibly valuable resource: Cara Putnam, a Professional Dog Trainer and Instructor with over 20 years of in-person experience. She is local to me here in Washington and offers in-person instruction, but for those who aren’t nearby, she has created an amazing online course — Puppy Foundations Academy through Puppy Training Depot. In this program, Cara provides new puppy parents with her proven, step-by-step system for fast house-training, gentle mouthing, confident socialization, and a strong start to obedience — so you can enjoy the happy, well-behaved dog you’ve always wanted without the stress or guesswork.
